The Revd Canon Nicholas Thistlethwaite MA PhD

Nicholas Thistlethwaite's work as an independent organ adviser has included instruments of many types and periods. As a diocesan organ adviser he has wide experience of architectural issues and his work as a cathedral precentor makes him familiar with the liturgical and musical setting of worship. In addition to overseeing the restoration, reconstruction or replacement of existing organs, he undertakes research enquiries, gives advice on grant applications, and prepares 'one off' reports for those considering their future options.

During the thirty years that Nicholas Thistlethwaite has been an organ consultant his projects have included new organs for St Oswald's, Durham (1988), Fitzwilliam College and St John's College, Cambridge (1993, 1994), Chelmsford Cathedral (1995), St Alban's, Copenhagen (2005) and St Edmundsbury Cathedral (2011). He has been involved with the restoration or reconstruction of organs in Birmingham Town Hall (1984, 2008), Eton College Chapel (1987), University Church, Cambridge (1995), Ely Cathedral (2001), Buckingham Palace (2002), St Anne, Limehouse (2006), St Giles-in-the-Fields (2007), St Mary the Virgin, Tottenham (2010), and Christ Church, Spitalfields (2015).

Dr Thistlethwaite is author of 'The making of the Victorian organ' (Cambridge University Press, 1990) and co-editor of the standard student text-book, 'The Cambridge companion to the organ' (1998); he has published more than a hundred articles and monographs, and lectures in this country and abroad. He is a former Chairman and now Honorary President of the British Institute of Organ Studies, has advised English Heritage and The Heritage Lottery Fund on organ projects, and has served on the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England. His book on The Work of Gray & Davidson 1772 to 1890 will be published shortly.
