David Sanger

David Sanger (1947-2010), was an international concert organist and highly respected organ teacher at Oxford, Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music, where he was chair of the organ department from 1987 to 1989. He won first prize in the 1969 St Albans International Organ Competition and made twenty LP recordings, mainly of French organ music, including the complete organ symphonies of Louis Vierne. He edited much organ music, arranged choral music (for OUP and Banks Music Publications), and wrote two acclaimed organ ‘methods’, published by Novello.

Touring widely in Europe brought him into contact with the finest organs of many traditions and periods, which informed not only his pedagogical work but his interest in advising on organ projects. Busy as organ adviser to the Rochester DAC, David Sanger became a founder-member of the AIOA, involved with numerous significant organ schemes, among them Exeter College, Oxford, Bromley parish church, Haileybury School, St Cuthbert’s and the Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Leeds Cathedral, Trinity Hall Cambridge and Strathclyde University.
