Central Hall

Westminster Central Hall. London

A substantial four-manual organ by Hill & Son from 1912 which has been substantially enlarged in 1969-70. Its maintainability had been profoundly compromised during this earlier work, with many components and mechanisms constructed in poor-quality materials and in such a way that it could not be repaired without major dismantling work. A difficult decision was taken by an AIOA adviser to rework the tonal design and make the instrument slightly smaller, such that it could be tuned and maintained with ease.

Finance was provided by a trust fund which required detailed evaluation of the need to restore the organ, its historicity, a thorough procurement process, assessment of work done and supervision of the payment schedule.
