Newcastle RC Cathedral

St Mary's RC Cathedral, Newcastle

This important building, designed by the renowned Victorian architect A.W.N.Pugin, originally housed a good 19th century organ by Lewis. Spoiled by inappropriate relocation, this instrument was replaced by a modest neo-baroque instrument in 1980, now relocated to a church more suited to its design.

The project for the new three-manual organ was supervised by an AIOA accredited adviser who had to negotiate numerous regulatory hurdles to have the instrument placed in the right position in the cathedral for both music and liturgy.

The result has been a versatile and highly acclaimed organ.
